certainly wouldn't know it. >> puts things in perspective. we're not playing so well now. you come out here and realize what people really go through in real life and kind of -- you know, it kind of snaps you back to reality pretty quickly. >> i started this two or three years ago and met brandon and we've been buddies ever since. so i make it a point whatever my calendar has it's about being with my buddy brandon. >> reporter: cassandra's oldest son corlin can't talk, but there's no doubt what he thinks about all this. >> they spent a lot of their day in therapy that it's nice to just let loose and have fun. >> reporter: a chance to let loose and the reminder that all kids have big dreams. in arlington beth parker, fox 5 news. >> what a wonderful story. thanks so much for joining us tonight at 10:00. here's brian now with the news edge at 11:00. it could be a winter storm for the history books.
11:01 pm
blizzard warnings are in effect from new jersey up to maine. take some live pictures now from foxboro, massachusetts. the storm could bring 1 to 3 feet of snow to parts of new england, winds up to 70 miles per hour. that's hurricane strength. amtrak's northeast corridor on lockdown, thousands of flights canceled. we'll have more on the travel situation in a minute. the snow mixing in with high winds and heavy waves on the coast making it feel like a winter hurricane. we have the story from sandwich beach on cape come. >> reporter: just trying to get out of the car you have to push the door open and it's just blowing the snow. it's heavy wet snow that is just blowing right at you. you know, i'm really not one to wear the goggles, but i didn't have much choice. >> gary mcgrady is in the weather center to tell us what's going on. we're grateful that's not here.
11:02 pm
>> i money i never will be issued a pair of those -- i hope i never will be issued a pair of those, but you never know. here's what's going on up there right now. the wind is whipping, the snow is falling and it's worthy every bit of what is going to be described as a blizzard. whether or not it's historic with the snow levels is yet to be determined, but the storm is getting stronger and heavy snow right now wrapping back around the cape into boston down through hartford, bridgeport and it looks like the way things are shaping up new york is probably going to be spared the heaviest of the snow. however, technically they're still in this blizzard warning. everybody you see in red. let me tell you now the blizzard is not defined by the snow that's falling. the blizzard and the blizzard warning is defined by the wind and the visibility. so if you get sustained wind of 35 -- really more than 35 miles per hour for a period of more than three hours or so and
11:03 pm
visibility being reduced down to 1/4-mile or lower, then technically by definition you have a blizzard. the winds are really gusting up there right now, 52-mile an hour wind gusts for boston, out at nantucket the 59 mile-per- hour wind gusts and hyannis now gusting to 60 miles per hour. most of the sustained winds up there are a little bit below the blizzard threshold right now, but this storm is still strengthening. it just began to phase a couple hours ago and that is basically what is going to see this thing really begin to get stronger out there as time goes by overnight tonight. just so you know, here are our wind gusts, 28 miles per hour in town, close to 40 for gaithersburg, dulles 45-mile an hour gusts. the wind advisory has been extended for just about everybody west of the bay, okay? there's a couple counties down south that are not in this yet,
11:04 pm
may have to be added to it. gusty wind overnight tonight and at least for the first part of tomorrow but again, brian, it's not a blizzard for us. we do have a storm system coming in next week, though, that we'll keep a close eye on. fox 5 accuweather seven-day forecast is coming up. the wicked weather leaving travelers stranded and causing major problems on the roadways in the northeast. fox's molly lyon has more. >> reporter: a monster blizzard now pounding the northeast, massachusetts banning all traffic from roads across the state as the powerful storm brings heavy snow and strong winds here. >> during those heavy bands of snow we expect up to 2 to 3 inches of accumulation per hour making for extremely dangerous conditions. i have declared a state of emergency effective at noon today. >> reporter: the national weather service saying boston is expected to get 2 to 3 feet of snow and this could break the city's record from 2003.
11:05 pm

11:07 pm
going to be crazy in that part of the country. so we want to make sure to get up there before it gets any crazier. >> reporter: catching the 1:30 bolt bus to new york luke runion who coaches the university of maryland boxing team. >> for me because i had made some plans that were not refundable i'm still heading up, but my team due to the school and their concern with the safety of the students, they'll cancel the event tomorrow and i understand that. >> reporter: here at reagan national planes are moving, but plenty of flights to some northern destinations are grounded. >> our flight was canceled and we don't know what we're going to do now. >> reporter: any other flights today? >> no. there's no flights today. >> reporter: this couple from brazil heading to canada, but the airport in toronto is closed. >> we go to a hotel or we wait here. we really don't know. here they don't know anything, so just wait. >> reporter: you can't get to toronto by mega bus.

11:09 pm
graham has said many times he committed no crime and it's time to move on. council member jim graham wanted to sit down with us tonight to make it clear he has no plans to step down from his ward 1 council seat. >> let's be very clear about this because there's no law broken or any suggestion of it. there is no illegal financial interests and nobody has indicated or suggested that there's any crime. >> reporter: earlier this week the district's ethics board announced it found evidence that graham violated the rules of conduct when he traded a vote on a d.c. lottery contract for a development contract, something graham denies. >> i never promised a quid pro quo that i can recall, you know, and some people may have recalled it. others don't recall it. i don't recall it ever happening, but even if i did, there was no crime. >> reporter: graham says the ethics board didn't even
11:10 pm
question him before releasing its reports. >> but here's our ethics board, you know, doing fact finding without any fact finding process and i think everybody is entitled to basic fairness. >> reporter: meanwhile late this afternoon council member tommy wells sent a letter to council chairman phil mendelson requesting he establish an ad hoc committee to look into graham's actions. >> we really have to deal with this, that this continues to erode the confidence that the citizens have in their elected government to be fair, be above board. >> reporter: graham fired back at wells and said this was a political move to support the washington post which has written several editorials on this ethics issue. >> most recently council member wells, you know, who has got one eye on the mayoral race and another on the washington post endorsement, you know. there's politics deep in all of

11:18 pm
thunderstorms were wrapping up around the center of the storm system coming up over long island and they were getting numerous reports here of thunder snow. it was coming down 2 to 3 inches an hour. this will continue to actually increase over the next few hours because the storm up there is still getting stronger and we've been showing you that pretty much the bull's eye here is going to be boston back out to the west and then down through providence and most of central sections of connecticut there where it's looking like 18 plus, not quite as bad for new york city. the storm has been a little farther offshore. the heaviest convective snow, the thunder snow, has stayed just east of new york city. so they probably will end up with maybe 6, something like that before it's said and done. we're windy overnight 20 to 30 gusting to 50. everybody into this wind advisory now unless you're in prince william county and you're down towards stafford county and spotsylvania county. this is the weekend. it's blustery tomorrow at least for the first part of the day.
